Me to 16 yr old client: your case will be dismissed and sealed in 6 months provided you have no new arrests.
Client: oh no, I never want to come back here. never ever. I want to go to law school one day!
Me: you'll be just fine! good luck in school... *an hour later after case has been called & client has been released*
Client: Ms., can I ask you a question when you get a chance?
Me: sure. let me wrap up the rest of my cases.
Client: no problem... *10 minutes later*
Me: so you had a question?
Client: *nervously twisting his hands together* Ms., I know this looks bad since I just got arrested & all, but I never met a lawyer who is brown like me. My parents never went to college. I have a good GPA, and I want to be a lawyer one day. Can I apply for an internship? I understand if you say no.
Me: *fighting back tears* keep my card and please stay in touch. would love to help you out!

Edwidge Danticat’s Recommended Books by Haitian... →
“I thought it would help to bring attention to these wonderful writers, many of whom had not been translated [into English] before. It’s also an unforced way of showing the different kinds of writing that Haitian writers can do. Very few of the writers originally wrote this kind of fiction. They went at it with such great force. I hope it encourages readers, especially those who haven’t...
